Sanjeev Sanyal

Sanjeev Sanyal is an Indian economist, urban theorist, author and popular historian having written several books on Indian history. He currently serves as the Economic Advisor to the Government of India, a position he has held since 2017. As a member of the Economic Advisory Council, he has helped prepare six editions of the Economic Survey of India and has represented India at G7 and OECD meetings. In his capacity, he has also been a vocal advocate for free trade and economic growth. He is also the Chancellor of Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics. 

Sanyal was born in Kolkata, India, in 1965. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from St. Stephen's College, Delhi, and a Master of Arts degree in economics from the University of Cambridge. 

After working as an economist at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, Sanyal joined Deutsche Bank in 1997. He held various positions at Deutsche Bank, including Head of Emerging Markets Research and Global Strategist. In 2017, Sanyal was appointed Economic Advisor to the Government of India. In this role, he has been responsible for advising the government on economic policy.
