From Tagore's Fruit-Gathering, Lets Emulate Supriya's, Compassionate Call to Action

With recent interruptions to SNAP benefits, many of our neighbors are facing growing food insecurity. SNAP, the nation’s largest anti-hunger program, supports more than 41 million Americans each month, including the 39% of households in Houston and Harris County that are food insecure.

In times like these, we are reminded of Tagore’s compassionate vision in Fruit-Gathering, where Supriya, the mendicant’s daughter, pledges to feed the hungry when others, despite their abundance, cannot. Her selfless act reflects Tagore’s call to our shared humanity.

We invite attendees to bring non-perishable food items such as shelf-stable snacks (granola bars, crackers, trail mix, nuts, etc.), canned goods, and drinks (water bottles, sports drinks, juice boxes).

Together, let us honor Tagore’s legacy through acts of service that uplift our community.
